In 2016, the U.S. marriage rate was at 6.9 per 1,000 people. Divorces have also been decreasing steadily since 2000, when the divorce rate was at 4.0 per 1,000 people. In 2016, the U.S. saw one of the lowest divorce rates ever at 3.2 per 1,000 people.

It might seem strange, but according to the U.S. Census Bureau, divorce rates are higher in certain areas of the country. In 2009, divorce rates were highest for both men and women living in the southern U.S., with states like Arkansas and Oklahoma having some of the highest divorce rates among men and Alabama and Kentucky having the highest divorce rates among women. In comparison, northeastern states tend to have lower divorce rates, with New Jersey having the lowest divorce rate.

3. Education May Have Something To Do With Divorce Rates

Studies have shown that couples who have more formal education tend to have lower divorce rates. According to a study conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, divorce rates steadily decreased as the level of education increased in both men and women. Those who have bachelor’s degrees or higher had the lowest divorce rates.

4. Age Could Factor Into the Divorce Rate, Too

Most people know that getting married at a young age correlates with a higher divorce rate, but studies have shown that getting married too late may actually increase your chance of divorce as well. A study published by the Institute For Family Studies found that divorce rates decrease the older you get--until you reach your early 30s, when the divorce rate actually starts to increase by about five percent per year.
